Sometimes you stumble upon situations so awful that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You wonder about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and spilled all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I panting. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was even worse. seemed to conspire against me. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
